A unique natural treasure

Created in 2011, " La Belle Henriette" National Nature Reserve covers 337 hectares and is one of the last true lagoons on the French Atlantic coast. Located east of La Tranche sur Mer, at the end of La Grière district, it is home to remarkable biodiversity and offers a unique landscape between land and sea. A must-see site to discover!

An astonishing natural space

The Belle Henriette lagoon is characterised by a landscape that has been constantly evolving since its gradual appearance during the 20th century. After being artificially separated from the ocean in 1972, it reconnected naturally in 2014 and now evolves freely with the tides. Each visit to Belle Henriette offers a unique experience with landscapes and light that change according to the tides, the season and the weather.

Walking and observing nature

La Belle Henriette is the perfect place for a peaceful walk in the heart of nature. Access to the reserve is only permitted via the footbridge over the lagoon. In La Tranche sur Mer, the footbridge gives you direct access to La Belle Henriette beach, where you can enjoy its unspoilt, wild natural environment.

As you walk, take the time to observe the flora and fauna around you. To learn more about the reserve and the species it is home to, educational panels are located along the footbridge. The lagoon will delight lovers of nature and beautiful landscapes.

In the event of very high tides, access to the footbridge may be closed to the public.

Discover the reserve

To learn more about the Belle Henriette lagoon, the association 'Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux' organises occasional guided tours of the reserve, in french (information about tours is available from our holiday advisors).

Families can explore the reserve by following our treasure hunt, ‘Discovering the Belle Henriette Reserve’ available on smartphones via the free Baludik app.

A picnic area near the footbridge offers panoramic views of the lagoon and the ocean.
