The National Forest
An area to be protected
The national forest is a unique ecosystem that must be preserved. As visitors, it is necessary to respect certain rules and good practices in order to protect it. Always follow the instructions and regulations posted on site. The ONF, which manages our forest, invites you to consult its recommendations for enjoying the forest while respecting it in the walker's charter ‘I act for the forest’.
Strolling in the forest
The forest is ideal for walks and hikes. In La Tranche sur Mer, there are two marked hiking trails: La Casse aux lièvres and Le Bout des Cabanes.
From the Dune de Paris picnic area, you can also reach La Terrière beach by following the signs for ‘L'océan par la forêt’ (The ocean through the forest).
For experienced hikers, the GR®8 long-distance trail crosses the national forest.
By bike, you can cross the forest using our dedicated cycle paths. Two of our suggested cycle routes take you along paths through the forest: the Carvor circuit and Entre Dunes et Marais.
Heading towards Longeville sur Mer / Les Sables d'Olonne, you can also enjoy the forest by following the Vélodyssée route.
Discover the forest
To discover the national forest and learn more about its development, biodiversity and management, we recommend taking a guided tour (in french) with a guide from the 'Office National des Forêts' (tours available in July and August only. Information available from our holiday advisors).
Families can explore the forest by following our treasure hunt, ‘The secrets of the national forest’, available on smartphones via the free Baludik app.
